Activities in 2005 in Phuket     |      Our past activities

The following  actions were made possible thanks to  the immediate response and  generosity of those who have seen the havoc and suffering caused by the tragic catastrophe of December 26th, 2004 as well  club members seen on European TV, while helping to identify missing loved ones, visiting  refugees, translating, or delivering goods to  the many affected areas.

Immediate relief Activity in Baan Nam Kem

Immediately after the Tsunami a delegation of .... made a first survey of the affected areas ...

what one was a flourishing small village is now washed away. Homes are taken, families separated, ships washed ashore...

3rd January 2005
In the days following the disaster our Club members together with many relief agencies were involved in the distribution of basic life sustaining supplies to those who lost almost everything.

Nothing remains of what has been here before that made live worth to live for the villagers of Baan Nam Kem.

Temporary shelter in simple tents

Survivors of this terrible disaster had to live in tents, as there was nothing to go to anymore

During the day they gathered in huge tents, set up by the military and local governments.

70 degrees C., al day long for many months to come with limited facilities for personal hygiene

We were deeply impressed with the caring attitude of the Thai Army who were of great support to the survivors.

The first destination was Takua Pa, the regional capitol of the area around Khao Lak, the worst hit areas in Thailand. There we meet with the Lions Club of Takua Pa who brought us to the local relief center, where we received a detailed report about the relief efforts and projects in this area.

Third and last destination of our trip was the island of Phi Phi, also among the worst hit region in Thailand. The devastation there was absolutely unbelievable. The process of rebuilding this tropical paradise will take years and hundreds of families will be without jobs and income for a long time. Most of the local survivors had to be brought to other regions, to live there, as there is no more infrastructure left in Phi Phi.
